Aetherion: An AI-Powered Identity-Forging Game Website
Transforming a static game marketing site into an immersive, interactive pre-launch experience where players explore the world, forge AI avatars, customize builds, and commit to purchase -all before the game even launches.
How might we convert a game website into an immersive, identity-driven system?
Aetherion is an AI-powered game website that transforms pre-launch engagement into an interactive identity-building experience. Users explore the world, generate AI avatars, refine a personalized hero, and bind a custom build before purchasing -turning marketing into meaningful interaction.
Static, Information-Heavy Websites
Most game websites today are just informational -focused on trailers and visuals, built mainly to push sales. They fail to emotionally invest players before purchase.
No Pre-Launch Identity
Players can't create or shape a character before launch. They can't discover their combat style through psychology or use AI to build a personalized playstyle.
Low Conversion Intent
Websites fail to retain attention because trailers alone don't influence purchase decisions. Without identity binding, there's no emotional commitment driving conversion.
No AI-Driven Personalization
Despite AI becoming common in games and apps, no competitor uses AI-based personalization on their website to match players to combat archetypes and build recommendations.
Five phases from empathy to validation
The design followed a structured double-diamond approach -diverging to explore the problem space, converging on key insights, then diverging again to ideate solutions before converging on a testable prototype.

Martin James -The Competitive Optimizer
Martin is a 26-year-old competitive PvP-focused RPG player with an M.S. in Computer Science from Tempe, Arizona. He thrives on optimization and measurable performance -studying patch notes, meta shifts, and build guides. For him, winning is about precision, timing, and intelligent execution.
From skepticism to "I want to start with this exact build"
Martin's journey through Aetherion follows five emotional phases -from initial doubt ("This better not be another cinematic-only site") through growing engagement, AI alignment validation, deep customization ownership, and finally purchase commitment.
Five pillars: Home, Map, Characters, Weapons, Oracle
The information architecture was structured around five primary sections -each serving a distinct player intent. The Oracle system introduces two unique paths: Refine a Chosen Hero or Forge an AI Avatar, branching into questionnaire-driven builds and deep customization.
Every screen builds the player's identity
Each screen is designed to progress the player deeper into the Aetherion world -from passive exploration to active identity creation. The flow is intentionally crafted to build emotional investment incrementally.
Home -Story Synopsis
The homepage opens with a cinematic story carousel (1/5 through 5/5) that unfolds Aetherion's narrative -from a world in balance, through catastrophic rift, to the lone warrior's rise. Players passively absorb lore before actively engaging with the rest of the site.
World Map
A fully illustrated interactive world map featuring 14 named regions -from Lumivale and Tyris Bay to Solcaris and Zerath'Kai. Each location carries unique lore and faction ties, encouraging exploration and world investment before gameplay begins.
Characters -Detailed Character Pages
Each character gets a full-screen showcase with immersive artwork, faction badge, star rating, faction lore, and detailed combat description. Characters include Lyra Voltanis (dual-current wielder), Nyxara Veyl (shadow infiltrator), Kaelor Thane (earth enforcer), Kael Pyrithis (arcane ritualist), Draven Solmark (sun-forged duelist), and Orion Blacktide (tidebreaker bruiser).
Weapons Gallery
Region-specific weapon showcases featuring immersive full-screen renders -from the Wardfall shield to Grimroot axe and Verdantia staves. Each weapon display includes a thumbnail gallery for browsing multiple weapons per region, reinforcing world-building through armament design.
Oracle -Entry Point
The Oracle system offers two paths: "Refine a Chosen Hero" (select and customize an existing character) or "Forge an AI Avatar" (create one from scratch using AI). This branching entry point lets both browse-first and create-first players find their preferred flow.
Oracle -Behavioral Quiz
"Reveal your instincts. We'll match you to your true combat path." -Three behavioral questions map the player's psychology to a combat archetype: aggression style ("Break the line" vs. "Hold ground"), power preference ("Pure magic" vs. "Steel and craft"), and team role (Finisher, Protector, Disruptor).
Oracle -Choose Character
Three character cards displayed as collectible-style selections -each with unique visual framing and a reload button for re-rolling options. The card-based selection creates a moment of deliberate choice, reinforcing identity commitment.
Shape every detail of your combat identity
The deep customization system gives players full control over their character's appearance, weapons, and aggression tuning. Every choice creates stat trade-offs, ensuring builds feel meaningful rather than cosmetic.
Prompt
Players provide a style prompt to define their desired character theme before visual and stat customization. This step sets the foundation for all subsequent decisions and streamlines the customization flow.
Appearance Customization
Players select primary colors, materials (Metallic, Matte, Crystal), and visual identity. The "Re-Roll Visuals" button regenerates appearance while keeping stats intact, separating aesthetic from mechanical decisions.
Aggression Tuning
A slider system lets players dial their playstyle from Safe to Aggressive. Each adjustment dynamically shifts Damage, Stability, and Cooldown Penalty stats, creating real trade-offs that mirror in-game build decisions.
Weapon Selection
Players choose their primary weapon with visual previews and stat breakdowns. Each weapon aligns with different combat archetypes, reinforcing the identity built through the Oracle quiz.
Oracle -Finalize & Purchase
"Awesome! Your character is bound to the Ether." -The finalization screen confirms the personalized character (Vyrel the Riftborn, $15) with an edit option, followed by the game purchase CTA: "Enter Aetherion -Start Edition, $64.99, includes all access at launch." Monetization is embedded at the emotional peak -after identity binding.

Identity binding drives purchase intent
The monetization strategy leverages commitment psychology -players invest time and emotion into creating their character, making the purchase feel like a natural next step rather than a sales push. The pricing is revealed only after identity binding is complete.
Explore & Discover
Browse the world map, characters, weapons, and lore. Build emotional investment through exploration.
Oracle Quiz & AI Generation
Take the behavioral quiz, get matched to an archetype, and generate an AI avatar. All free to maximize engagement.
Lock Your Character Build
Save your customized character -appearance, abilities, aggression tuning -bound to the Ether. Revisitable anytime before launch.
Buy Aetherion -Start Edition
Full game purchase. Includes all access at launch. Your pre-built character is ready on day one.
Survey-validated engagement and conversion hypothesis
The survey results from 35 RPG players validated three core metrics -engagement time, emotional investment, and purchase likelihood -all increased through the interactive identity creation flow.
Ownership = Commitment
More likely to purchase if they can "try identity first" before buying.
Engagement Time
72% spent 8+ minutes exploring the Aetherion flow -far above industry average.
Increased Interest
After experiencing the Oracle flow, interest in purchasing increased significantly.
Purchase Likelihood
Identity binding before purchase drove measurably higher conversion intent.
What I learned
Designing Aetherion challenged the assumption that game websites should be passive marketing tools -and proved that interactive identity systems can transform engagement, emotion, and revenue.
Marketing can be gameplay. When we stopped treating the website as a brochure and started treating it as the first level of the game, everything changed. Players didn't just visit -they played.
Identity drives conversion better than features. Showing players who they'll BE in the game is more powerful than showing them what the game HAS. The Oracle quiz was the highest-engagement feature by a wide margin.
Progressive disclosure handles complexity. The Oracle flow works because complexity is layered -quiz first (simple), archetype reveal (exciting), customization (deep). Players who want depth can go deep; casual players can stop at the archetype result.
Place the CTA at the emotional peak, not the landing page. Moving the purchase prompt from the homepage to the post-identity-binding screen increased purchase likelihood because the player already felt ownership. They weren't buying cold -they were committing.
